Movement and Mindfulness: A Daloy Movement Workshop at UP Diliman

Julienne Depatillo, a cherished member of Daloy Dance Company since 2018 and an accomplished ballet and contemporary dance teacher, recently took center stage to lead a Daloy Movement Workshop at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City.

This 2-day workshop, a testament to the fusion of dance and meditation, blossomed into reality through the gracious invitation of Prof. Rina Angela Corpus. Prof Corpus, the visionary founder of Galaw Nilay and an esteemed assistant professor at the Department of Art Studies, University of the Philippines, believes in the profound impact of Daloy Movement. For her, it's not merely a dance practice but a guiding philosophy for fostering creativity and embodied living.

The collaboration with UP Diliman 's Prof. Rina Corpus, allowed Daloy Dance Company. to share a glimpse of the magic brewing within their artistic realm. The workshop, fueled by the students' enthusiasm, unveiled movement as a potent form of meditation and a captivating means of expression.

Daloy Movement occupies a special place in their hearts, transcending beyond a dance form into a way of being one that fosters a profound connection with oneself and the surrounding world. The mission is clear: extend this beautiful practice to more communities, sharing its power with all who yearn to explore the synergy of movement and mindfulness.

Daloy Dance Company extends a heartfelt thanks to Prof. Rina Angela Corpus and the University of the Philippines Diliman for the warm embrace and wholehearted welcome into the realm of Daloy Movement. This marks not just a workshop but a commitment to more shared experiences, more connections, and an ongoing journey of movement and self-discovery.

The resonance of shared experiences, newfound connections, and the exploration of movement and mindfulness will continue to inspire long after the last dance step.

We asked Julienne some questions, as Daloy Movement Facilitator, and here are her insights:

1. What was your favorite part about being a Daloy Movement facilitator in UP Diliman for this workshop?

"I loved that I was facilitating sa alma mater ko! And at my home college too (CAL). It felt like a homecoming. Natuwa lang ako talaga sa fact na parang full circle yung nangyari - kasi actually I first experienced Daloy Movement sa UP also, nung student pa ako. A friend invited me to a movement workshop where ate Ea was facilitating. So to do Daloy Movement now as the facilitator was really a heart-warming moment for me. It felt good to share something that has really helped me to a new generation of UP students."

2. What were some of the surprising or new feedback from students or feedback in general?

"Ang main feedback is nakaka-relax and destress yung movement - which is not surprising or new ata pero nakakatuwa lang na nakapag-release sila ng stress kahit papano. I think yung pinaka-interesting na feedback is what one student said, sabi niya he found it interesting that a series of seemingly random movements could be so relaxing. Parang nagulat sila na restful din pala ang pag-galaw. Kasi usually pag galaw ang naiisip nila nakakapagod - pero for once daw nakapagrest sila dahil sa movement. They realized that it was possible to rest through movement din pala."

3. You were one of the twenty people in early 2020 that got certified to facilitate a Daloy Movement workshop and jam — what would you say is a new thing that you learned about this practice now compared to your experiences of it in 2020 and before that? What changed for you?

"Actually, to be honest, after I got certified in 2020, I never got to really facilitate a 'full' workshop kasi walang opportunity during the pandemic. I used Daloy Movement exercises for my contemporary classes, but that was always only a section of the class. And that was for students with formal dance training. This year lang ako actually nakapag-facilitate ng full workshops for people with little to no dance training. I think yun yung main difference. I really learned how to focus and contextualize the exercises I made based on the needs of the people attending the workshops. And also dati kasi, takot talaga ako mag-facilitate (laughs). Super controlling ko kasi back then, kailangan planado lahat. But experiences in the past few years have taught me to let go a little and listen to the inner voice that guides me (for me si Holy Spirit yun hehe). So now in planning workshops, I pray, set goals based on the participants' perceived needs, make exercises based off of that, pero parang outline lang yun. Flexi pa rin on the day depending on how people are."
