"Joy & Daloy": A Twinbill Show at The CCP

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

Daloy Dance Company Goethe Institut Philippinen and Cultural Center of the Philippines proudly present "Joy & Daloy," a contemporary dance production set to captivate audiences on January 27, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at CCP Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez.

The Intersection of Tradition and Innovation

In this show we bring together the traditional essence of Filipino culture and the innovative spirit of contemporary expressions. Joy Alpuerto Ritter, an acclaimed German-Filipina dancer and choreographer in Europe, performs "Babae," a 30-minute solo performance that challenges conventional notions of femininity, celebrating strength and resilience. At the forefront of contemporary dance innovation in the Philippines, Daloy Dance Company presents "ItikLandia," a unique blend of contemporary dance and devised theatre exploring themes of development, gentrification, and displacement.

A Commitment to Environmental Advocacy

More than just a dance production, "Joy & Daloy" carries a deeper message. Through our art, we aim to contribute to the larger dialogue on sustainability and climate change. "ItikLandia" serves as a powerful hymn to the natural world, encouraging a profound connection to cultural roots and a heightened environmental consciousness.

Babae: Redefining Femininity with Strength and Resilience

In "Babae," Joy Alpuerto Ritter takes center stage, weaving together a captivating narrative that challenges traditional notions of femininity. Drawing inspiration from her extensive experience, including collaborations with the renowned Akram Khan Company in Europe, Joy brings a multi-awarded contemporary dance piece that explores the summoning of power associated with women as witches.

Through a 30-minute solo act, "Babae" ingeniously blends Philippine folk dance, contemporary styles, and hip hop, creating a dynamic and thought-provoking piece that showcases the strength and resilience inherent in every woman. This powerful performance serves as a testament to the diversity and dynamism of contemporary dance, leaving a lasting impression on audiences.

ItikLandia: A Hymn to the Natural World

In the creation of Daloy Dance Company, under the direction of Ea Torrado, "ItikLandia" unfolds as a tapestry of contemporary dance and devised theatre. Inspired by the popular "Itik-itik" dance, this piece serves as a hymn to the natural world, inviting the audience to reflect on themes of development, gentrification, and displacement.

As the dancers navigate through the choreography, "ItikLandia" offers more than just a visual spectacle. It provides a thought-provoking perspective on our connection to cultural roots and the impact of human actions on the environment. As Daloy Dance Company aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the world around us and inspire a collective commitment to environmental stewardship.
