Here is a little blog-story from my visit in Korea to research, as one of the choreographers for Ahn Eun Me Dance Company. This new work will be part of Seoul International Dance Festival

My journey in Korea has been nothing short of extraordinary. Meeting with our dramaturg, Jaelee, was a delightful experience as we prepared for my upcoming performance at the Seoul Performing Arts Festival. Creative ideas flowed, and camaraderie was fostered with fellow choreographers and the Ahn Eun Me Company. Exploring Seoul's vibrant streets, temples, parks, and diverse cuisine left me energized and ready for the festival.

I currently immersed in the world of contemporary dance in Seoul, observing rehearsals by the renowned Ahn Eun Me Company. This seasoned Korean choreographer is collaborating with me and other talented Asian choreographers for an upcoming production titled "Welcome to your Korea."

I had the privilege of visiting the rehearsals of Sung Yong Kim, a dear friend and artistic director of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company. Their dedication and artistry left me inspired. They also enjoyed delectable Korean cuisine with friends from Ahn Eun Me Company.

Had a wonderful time seeing dancer and dance teacher, Chaya Joyce Baris in Seoul over coffee and chikahan! Also walked around Eyhwa Women’s University which was so beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed reflecting upon and jotting down the parallels and distinctions between Korea and the Philippines. Additionally, I spent time contemplating concepts for my choreography in preparation for the "Welcome to Your Korea" show.

When I travel to other countries, the first thing I seek out are parks. I have a deep appreciation for trees and enjoy observing people in these serene environments. Whether it's friends gathering, kids playing, someone engrossed in a book, or simply individuals resting on a park bench, these scenes bring me immense joy. Seoul, I want to express my gratitude for your abundance of stunning parks.

I stumbled upon a charming cafe adorned with lush plants and vibrant flowers. It exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, reminiscent of our home in La Union. In that moment, I found myself missing our cats dearly. As I savored a delightful cheesecake and sipped on refreshing watermelon juice, I couldn't help but appreciate the comfort of such cozy cafes while leisurely exploring the bustling city of Seoul!

Visited a gallery dedicated to a K-drama called Alchemy of Souls!

Today, I met with Kenneth Lagamayo, president of PIKO in Seoul. About PIKO PINOY ISKOLARS SA KOREA - PIKO (주한필리핀유학생협의회) was established in 2006 as the official student organization recognized by the Philippine Embassy committed to the promotion of fellowship and cooperation among Filipino students in the Republic of Korea. The organization’s commitment is to develop the members’ potentials and promote Filipino culture to the international community.

I had the pleasure of meeting Kenneth over drinks and cheesecake, where we engaged in lively discussions about the experiences of scholars and students in Seoul, as well as the Filipino community in Korea. Our conversation revolved around what draws people to Korea and keeps them living here. Special thanks to Eva Marie Wang for the introduction!

An inspiring exposition brought together students from diverse universities across Korea to showcase their ingenious projects in the realms of design, architecture and environmental sustainability.

Not only were the designs visually stunning, but they also offered innovative solutions to modern-day issues that harm our environment. Among the standout projects, some students delved into the fascinating world of mycelium, harnessing its potential for eco-friendly materials. Others focused on repurposing discarded furniture, breathing new life into old items.

Also, there were those who embraced nature-friendly building techniques, using adobe and brick to create structures that harmonized with the environment. Some even transformed cooking oil into eco-friendly soap, highlighting the importance of reducing waste and embracing eco-conscious practices. It’s nice to see the creativity and dedication of young minds inKorea, who are actively contributing to a more sustainable andenvironmentally friendly future.

Being in Seoul as a choreographer for the Ahn Eun Me Dance Company, working on a new contemporary performance titled "Welcome to your Korea." My part of the piece explores the lives of Filipinos who have found a home in Korea.

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Roger, a member of the Filipino Workers Community and the Catholic Church in Seoul. Thanks Roger, for us spending a delightful afternoon chatting about his experiences as a Filipino in Korea, spanning over 32 years.

Later, I enjoyed some delicious food at the Filipino Sunday Market in Heyhwa. It was wonderful to connect with so many Filipinos here. It's truly remarkable how Filipinos can adapt and thrive wherever they go! Thanks Eva Marie Wang for introducing Roger and me.

I had the privilege of spending an evening with Ahn Eun Me, a celebrated Korean choreographer with a career spanning over three decades. She's unapologetically herself, creating multiple productions annually, driven by an insatiable hunger for creating contemporary dance.

It was a pleasure to meet the talented Filipina music composer and sound designer, Nicky Juanite, in person. She is intelligent and also kind. And her sound art and music compositions are outstanding. I'm grateful for our meeting.

It’s worth noting that Seoul has so much to offer. I came across some captivating urban artworks and caught a glimpse of the mesmerizing Meyongdong Theatre in the photos.

Navigating through public transportation is effortless. Plus, you can find an abundance of delicious street food.

Also, I've had the pleasure of interacting with many Korean locals, who have always been incredibly kind and helpful, whether it's asking for directions or just engaging in a friendly chat.
