On March 30, 2023, British School Manila is having Daloy Dance Company perform and teach at their Bayanihan Theatre
"Nature Dances" is an exploration and play, with Philippine traditional folk-dance movements that reference to our flora and fauna. Daloy will be teaching 3 creative movement workshops to British School Manila students, wherein we will study the dance's origins, the town it was from, the function in its community, and the ways in which we can play with this movement vocabulary using different physical theatre exercises in an outdoor space where we can see and interact with our natural surroundings.
We will be using the book by noted Filipina folk dancer and academic, Francesca Reyes-Aquino, called Philippines Folk Dances, as reference for our movement research.
Selected workshop students could be later on invited to perform with Daloy Dance Company after their workshops. These performances will be structured improvisation, using the theme from the session as well as mirroring the nature-reverence of our folk Filipino people, as shown through their dances. There will also be 2 performances of Daloy within the same day of the 3 workshop offerings.
The goals of this engagement with BSM students is to offer more information on Philippine traditions, and to use contemporary dance and physical theatre techniques to interact and commune with our natural surroundings, and deepen our relationship with nature; much like the Filipino's animistic history and culture of ecological respect and rich communal dance rituals.
Dancers and Teachers from Daloy will be Ea Torrado, Deborah Lemuel, Brian Abano, Jomarie Cruz and Julienne Depatillo.
Artistic Director, Ea Torrado as invited speaker at British School Manila in 2019
